This is the tale of a 49 year old Australian woman who in the space of few short years went from being a totally unfit, overweight smoker who didn't really even think about running or fitness to having a life defining moment at a doctors one day and changing her life. Losing a huge amount of weight, stopping smoking, starting walking and then running and then running further then running some more.

This is a story of an endurance adventure that ultimately challenged Tania both physically and mentally. Along with Robert, her partner who supported her as her one and only crew, she embarked on the mammoth task of running the 440km Hume and Hovell Track.

Beginning at Cooma Cottage in Yass, the track follows the trails discovered by explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in the south east of NSW, Australia.  It traverses both rugged and beautiful countryside while following a mix of public roads, fire trails, purpose built single track and over 100 footbridges and finishes at the Hovell Tree at Albury.

The track is without a doubt one of New South Wales’ best kept secrets.  After 18 months of planning, Tania realised her dream of completing the track when she finished the entire journey at the Hovell Tree in Albury at around 8:30pm on October 2.

But this journey wasn't just a physical one but a journey to health and strength, to confidence and resilience and to much soul searching in the aftermath.

Be inspired and encouraged from this everyday hero story.

In this episodes Running Hot Coaches Lisa Tamati and Neil Wagstaff discuss the importance of cadence, how you can increase your cadence and why you should care.

What time of your season you should be focusing on your cadence and how hard and fast the 180 steps per min rule is or not.

They discuss form drills and technique and why you should have a off season time during the year when you can focus on these things while doing lower mileage and how the brain works in regards to reprogramming yourself.

Long slow distance high mileage models vs high quality lower mileage holistic programmes.

Lisa discusses the pros and cons. Why the traditional high mileage model works to a point and what adaptations it brings but why it leads to a high incidence of injury. Over 90% of marathon runners are injured every year.

She discusses why this model is especially good for young athletes but why it brings an increasing amount of problems as the miles and the years add up and why you need a holistic approach your training

The old traditional high mileage models, doing predominantly long slow training sessions work to a point but often lead to a high incidence of injury, in fact over 90% of all marathon runners are injured every year according to studies. Injuries to knees rate high as do calf problems achilles, plantar fasciitis and more so is there a more effective way to train.

Why does it work when you are young doing this high mileage system but often lead to problems as the miles and years pile up and is there a better way.

Alex Charfen is one of my greatest teachers and mentors, his systems and processes for scaling and growing business are second to none.

Alex is the founder of Charfen.com  a coaching and consulting business that helps takes businesses from start up to to billion dollar enterprises.

He is the author of the "The Entrepreneurial Personality type"

https://www.charfen.com/free-ebook/

Podcaster at the "Momentum Podcast"

Alex believes Every day, new members of this tribe of "Entrepreneurs" are born with a unique set of gifts and issues that will, for better or worse, drive them for all of their lives. They will chase momentum, and even long for it. They will have a hard time fitting into the
systems built for everyone else. And, in the end,
if they survive and are able to stay un-medicated and
un-incarcerated, they will likely change the world.

They’ve locked themselves in rooms and invented the light bulb but only after ten thousand failed tries; they have launched rockets into space and landed them safely, but only after explosions and scrubbed missions; they’ve built and lost great empires; and sadly, some, perhaps most, have spent their lives as misunderstood and out of step dreamers with unhappy endings.

Alex has studied greatness for decades and here is what he has found: All of the notable entrepreneurs down through history have a great deal in common with each other, and, quite frankly, very little in common with the rest of the world. They share The Entrepreneurial Personality Type (EPT) with all of its quirks and idiosyncrasies. They are a restless bunch with an intrinsic need to move and build and strive. His own remarkable entrepreneurial journey reflects that.

He is also the author of the Billionaire Code. https://billionairecode.com/know-the-code

A framework and structure that helps show business owners where they are on the business growth ladder and what exactly they need to focus on at each level.C

Alex has known from a young age that he was different, and this led him on a path to studying the world’s greatest entrepreneurs to find out how they achieved so much in their lives. His research led to founding the Entrepreneurial Personality Type (EPT) and helping tens of thousands of 6, 7, and 8-figure entrepreneurs use this information to grow and scale their business while building maximum sustainable momentum. From consulting for billionaires, the Fortune 500 and some of the most successful people in the world.

Alex is the co-founder and CEO of CHARFEN, empowering entrepreneurs to grow and scale businesses and make their greatest contribution. 1. Being Present

2. On Alert

3. Loaded state - things are go pear shaped

4. Fight or flight state

5. Total overwhelm and full on panic.

If you turn up in any level except level 1 your team will likely be on the next step up.

So reflect on how you are turning up.

She looks at the importance of consistency, openess, transparency, showing vulnerability, understanding your own strengths and weaknesses.

World Champion Motorcycle Racer Wayne Gardner has just released a brand new movie "Wayne" about his crazy life and reaching the pinnacle of Motorcycle Racing.

The film captures the life and career of the Aussie, who went from owning a $5 motorbike in Wollongong, Australia, to winning the 1987 500cc World Championship with wife Donna Forbes by his side.

I had the privilege of being invited to meet and have an interview with Wayne to discuss sports psychology and the importance of the mental game when it comes to winning in sport.

In this episode I share some of Waynes' and my own insights into this fascinating and underrated area of work and why every athlete should be focussing more on his or her mental game to get the edge over the competition.

Dr. Sherr believes that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) -- the administration of 100% oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure -- is one of the most powerful ways to decreasing inflammation, accelerate wound healing, and optimise both physical and mental performance.

He is one of the few HBOT providers in the USA that creates personalised treatment plans for patients that include cutting edge & dynamic HBOT protocols, adjunctive technologies, laboratory testing, and nutritional interventions.

Dr. Sherr is the Director of Integrative Hyperbaric Medicine and Health Optimization at Hyperbaric Medical Solutions, in addition to operating his own independent hyperbaric consultation practice and performing in-person consultations in the San Francisco Bay Area (where he lives). Dr. Sherr aims to create access and educate all those who may benefit from HBOT through telemedicine consulting, advocacy, and education practice worldwide.

I wanted to share this episode because hyperbaric was the therapy that I credit with being the major component in my mother, Isobel's rehabilitation after a devastating brain injury over two years ago.

Isobel was left with hardly any higher funcitoning, the brain damage was so severe she was unable to control her body in any meaningful fashion, had virtually no memory, no speech and was let in the . stage of a toddler at the age of 74.

But after three months in hospital and after months studying hyperbaric oxygen therapy and searching for somewhere to get her access to it I was lucky enough to find a chamber to use. Wha followed was in my opinion nothing short of miraculous. and now after thousands of hours of training, combined with supplemetation and diet changes and over 170 hyperbaric sessions later. Mum is completely normal again, can walk, read, write, do all her normal daily duties and is living a full life again, her doctor saying is a one in a million comeback story.

This is why I was so excited to get one of the worlds leading experts on this therapy to speak on my podcast and to explain much lcearer and better just what the mechanisms of HBOT are and the benefits, limitations and research going into this area of medicine.

So make sure you save this episode and share it as far and as wide as possible.

The fact that I was able to get access to one of the world's top experts in this fields is just amazing and I want to make sure that all who need to hear this information get access to it and to hypebaric oxygen therapy.

I am also happy to have people contact me direct with questions.

There’s a darkness in our world. 1 billion people live in extreme poverty.
It’s made darker by the fact that in this same world, extreme consumerism exists.
Each day as consumers, we give billions of dollars to the world’s largest multinationals for everyday products.
Thankyou the social enterprise that is taking not only Australia but now NZ by storm, thinks it’s time to bring the light.

What began as an impossible idea, dreamed up by Daniel Flynn, his best mate Jarryd, and girlfriend (now wife) Justine, is now backed by a passionate team of 50, and a consumer movement of thousands.
‘Consumer movement’ could sound like a fluffy, throw-away phrase.

But picture this. For 5 years, the major supermarkets in Australia had said no to Thankyou. Then one day they launched this video and thousands of people began petitioning to the supermarkets. Two LEGENDARY helicopter pilots, Peter and Geoff, donated their time to fly these signs above the head offices of those two supermarkets and in record-breaking time, both said yes.

Products hit the shelves, including their hand wash that has since become number one in the category. You might have seen it at your fave brunch spot.
With the idea working in Australia, they launched a book titled “Chapter One” to crowdfund the launch of Thankyou in New Zealand and beyond.

Within two hours of this launch video, they had raised $360,000, with now over $1.9 million raised and counting. The book is sold at a pay what you want price with people paying from $0.05 (don’t be that guy) to $50,000 for a copy. In  airport bookstores it was second to only the Harry Potter book launch. And it’s only the first chapter.

We discuss this revolutionary new business model and take a peek at the visionary powerhouse behind the man and this company.

With over $5.5 million already donated to causes aimed at ending global poverty in over 16 countries, and their story is really only just beginning. They have beaten all the odds, taken on the biggest multinationals and created a consumer movement that is literally impacting millions.

And now we want to challenge you to get onboard and get in behind the launch by buying their everyday products at your local supermarket and by telling two friends about it, gifting them a product and asking them to do the same. Check out www.telltwo.co.nz for details.

Show Notes –

Isobel had an aneurysm and a massive stroke two and a half years ago and was critical for weeks and was not expected to survive.

Due to a medical blunder by the receiving Doctor in the emergency ward it took 18 hours to get into surgery.

Waited 6 hours in the emergency department waiting room as the doctor believed she had a migraine.  Got a paramedic friend to help her.  Finally got a CT Scan – and saw that there was massive bleeding on the brain.  Then went to Wellington Hospital for the surgery.  Had a stent put into her brain to drain the blood.  Also put a coil into the brain to stop the bleeding.  Spent the next month in and out of ICU fighting for her life.  Having brain spasms and losing consciousness.  Spent three months in hospital in total.  One month in Wellington and two months in New Plymouth.

After pushing from Lisa she was tested and diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea and put on oxygen.  Lisa started studying hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Isobel finds it astounding to hear the whole story as she was unconscious and unaware of a lot of it.

She had no memory, she couldn’t speak, she couldn’t control any functions in her body.

Her first memory was inside the hyperbaric oxygen chamber.  Took her down to 1 ½ atmospheres which is ideal for brain injury.  Given 100% medical grade oxygen which hyper oxygenates the body.  You can take up to 7 time the normal amount of oxygen.  Also permeates the blood brain barrier faster.

Isobel said that it is isn’t painful but you do have to be very patient.  She is able to take her iPad in with her and she listens to podcasts.

Life is now back to complete normal most of the time.  But there are still some areas where she struggles.  She can do everything but it takes twice of long and there is a lot of effort required.

She can walk slowly for a 1 km now.  She has had to relearn all the normal movement patterns.

Because of her age doctors were not confident she would be able to be fully rehabilitated.

One of the keys to that process of having parallel bars.  They were gifted to them by a family friend.  Spend a good hour on the bars per day.

Her biggest success to date is that she got her drivers licence back.  Lisa felt it was important that Isobel could feel in control of own destine which driving would give her.  Still working towards full independence but definitely working towards that.  Her goal is to be healthier than she was before.

Goes to the gym five days a week.  Lifting weights.  You lose muscle mass and bone density because of the lack of movement at first.   She has just had a bone density test and she is off the scales high.

It is important when you are older to face challenges.  Isobel says she needed someone to help to push her.  She had to be relentless in her training because that is the only way back.  When you let things go it is a long way back.  To take away the goals and achievements it to die.  We need to feel like we are going forward.  Let’s make the most out of every day.  It is the discipline of today that helps us to be stronger tomorrow.

Rest and recovery is important too but in a rhythm with working out.

Never give up.  You don’t know how far you can go.

A few months into her recovery she crewed with Lisa when she ran across the North Island with her husband and business partner to raise money for a friend’s charity.  That friend, who has previously appeared on the podcast, died in an accident during a half marathon.

Lisa is currently writing a book about her Mum’s recovery.

Show Notes – Cushla Young

Lisa and Cushla met on one of Lisa’s running retreats.

Started running half marathons 7 – 8 year ago.  Had run three by the time she met Lisa.  She went to one of Lisa’s seminars and was really inspired.  She booked a weekend retreat and then helped out on the next retreat.  At that point she started doing full marathons.

Talk about not being natural athletes.  Also talk about identifying yourself as “a runner.”  It wasn’t about speed, or being at the front of the pack, it was about running and what it did for her outlook on life.

Lisa tells the story of when both Cushla and Lisa’s Mums were in the same hospital at the same time.  Cushla and her husband turned up with a big bowl and a plan, and kindly washed Lisa’s Mum’s hair.  It was a very touching moment of compassion and friendship.

A story of Carpe Diem – seize the day.

Cushla and her husband Richard both had good jobs, loved their lives in New Plymouth and weren’t thinking about any big change.  Their friends called up from Tonga and suggested they pack up their dog and come on over in order to manage their second resort.  It took a month to make up their minds and then Cushla took a year’s sabbatical from her teaching career.

Cushla and Lisa both refer to their fertility issues.  When you don’t have kids you have got to make your own lives; you have to be a bit more active in finding joy in life.

Lisa asks how the reality compares to the fantasy we all have of running away to a tropical island.

12 bungalows and a restaurant at the resort.  It is very isolated being based on one of the outlying islands.  18 x 1 kilometres in size.  Their local town has one shop – a cross between a $2 shop and a bad dairy.  There are long hours and not many days off.  Most of the food comes via ship from New Zealand or the main island of Tonga so they have to plan their menus and supplies two months in advance.   There is some fresh fruit available.   Most people in the island grow food for themselves not for supplying others.  When things break you can’t get them fixed quickly and that puts pressure on things.  The only water is rain water supply so you have to preserve this.

They have fun with the guests.  Often they arrive quite stressed and it is fascinating to watch people begin to relax over the first few days.

Humpback whale season starts mid July.  They travel from Antarctica to give birth and take care of their babies.  They send out eight boats a day with only four people in the water at any one time.  The whales are very curious.  It takes your breath away.  Whales have a deep mindful eye.  Each whale pod has a song and it changes slightly each season.

Cushla is not a natural outdoorsy adventurous person.   The first time she went swimming with the whales she had a Go Pro with her.  She ended up recording a sound track of her hyperventilating.  Then she stopped breathing for about two minutes when the whales turned up.

They have to steal moments in the day to go and enjoy the island.  Some days are easier to do that than others.

She has realised that this year is about chilling out and just enjoying the experience.  She learned to change her mindset and realise that she doesn’t have to be the best resort manager the world has ever seen.

Tells the story of the two wolves inside us.  The bad wolf and the good wolf are always fighting inside.  Which wolf wins?  The one that you feed.  You still have bad days – even if you live in paradise; you’re just a bit hotter.  Realise you don’t have to get tangled up in the things that don’t really matter.  Learning to focus on the joy of being on the island, of meeting people from all over the world, cooking an amazing meal, spending time with her husband.

Talks about struggling a little without the large support network that she has back home in New Zealand.  She talks about having to help herself through hard times.

Lisa talks about how nature helps to ground her and to cope when times get hard.

Cushla walks on the beach with her dog and listens to audible books and podcasts.  Reconnecting with herself.

Always remember you are always the same person no matter where you are.  Every day you choose what you focus on and same days this can be hard.  Forgive yourself when you have those days that just don’t work out like you thought it would.  Be kind to yourself.  Don’t expect yourself to be superwoman.

Take the opportunities that do come.

Running as Therapy – Show Notes

Why running is cheaper than therapy.

Why do you do all this long-distance running?

For me running is so much more than just a sport, a way to keep fit.  It is a way of life.  It is what I have used for my therapy.  It has literally saved my life.

Why running is so powerful as a means of mental health.  Movement in nature is the key point.  You find out so much about who you are and what you are capable of.  It helps you overcome the chatter that you have going on constantly in your brain.  When I go running that chatter slows down.  It takes about 20 minutes to get rid of the day’s grind then once you start to connect with your body and nature, your mind and your processes start to clear.  It is a wonderful time for reflection.  It is a very powerful mechanism to help find balance.

We are living in a very artificial environment.  This is not how our ancestors lived.  We are disconnected from our true nature.

How blue light is affecting us.

Inundated with messages from people all around the world who are struggling with mental health issues and massive challenges.  It is a privilege to hear these stories and try to help them.  I have tried to share with people the honest journey that I go through; the highs, the lows, the challenges.  I think people are hungering for real human connection.

With our run training we start with the mindset, the motivation and helping them with their mental struggles before we get onto the nuts and bolts of running.  We can help them on a much deeper level.

Wanted to share the back story and why I say running helped save my life.  In my early 20s I was in an abusing controlling relationship.  I was in a constant state of being pushed beyond my limits physically and being constantly told that I was useless.  Went from being an equal partnership to being controlled completely.  My mindset was all about survival.

Talks about her horrendous journey across the Libyan desert in which her relationship unravelled.  It took a long time to recover physically but the mental scars left her a broken person for a long long time.  It took running to put her back together.

The Marathon de Sables.  Surrounded by positive people that she hadn’t been for years.  She found like minded wonderful crazy people.  She felt encourages and confident.  Did really well in the race and then wanted more and more.  I wasn’t as useless as I had been told.  Running became my therapy and hence the title of the podcast.  What followed was 25 years of mad adventures.

Had grown up in a family that valued mental and physical toughness.  Weakness was not tolerated.  Took me years to find my way back.  Running has given me so much.  I learned so much about what I am capable of.  I can overcome my fears.  I learned team work, I learned how to market myself, to speak, business, leading with a vision.

Having good daily ways of coping and de-pressurising ourselves.

If you are facing mental health issues, if you are in a difficult relationship etc, you are not alone.  There are lots of people going through a lot of things and finding strength from each other and in telling our stories.  I hope this gives you the courage to feel not alone and that you can find a way through.  I encourage you to take up an outdoor sport.  Find your peace with yourself and get back on the road to recovery.  Reach out to people who can help you.  Find like-minded people.

All my life I’ve felt like a fish out of water in the workforce.  I cannot stand to be in an office environment.  I felt like it was all my fault because I wasn’t getting ahead in my career.  But I was always an entrepreneur.  I want to be independent, I don’t fit in anyone else’s square.  I like to say I am unemployable.  It doesn’t mean we are lazy, or dumb, or there is something wrong with us.  It just means that we haven’t found our tribe yet.

Find your tribe who will help you be the best version of you that you can be.

Never, ever, give up.

Fail, fail fast and keep going.

Never stop.

Ever since Alani was a little girl she always knew she was born to serve others and protect life.  That desire led to a life in the United States military.

She became a special agent working for the Air Force and started her career in Japan working a lot of drug cases.  She started a country wide programme to prevent the sexual abuse of children via the Internet.  From there she deployed to the Middle East where she worked for Special Forces to chase terrorists.  Then she went to the headquarters in Quantico where she over saw counter intelligence.  She returned to the Middle East doing counter intelligence / counter terrorism work and then she became a senior bodyguard to a senior government official.

Alani talks about pushing the limits in her professional life and how she maintained her resilience throughout.

How to taper for that big race you have coming up. What to do if you have missed some of your long training runs?

How to prepare yourself mentally for the battle ahead and how to stop the fear monsters from getting you in this phase, telling you you are getting unfit, putting on weight and so on.

It's just the brain trying to guilt you out so don't listen to it and stick to the plan.

Why the taper is crucial and why you should do extra mobility workouts and mental preparation with the likes of meditation and visualisation exercises. Asking yourself about the "Why". What you motivation is for this event and what is the result or purpose of this.
