Natasha Sekulic is an overachiever. A young, ambitious Australian woman who is mild mannered lawyer by day an adventure seeking, limit pushing, kick ass ultrarunner by night. 

 

Having no athletic background at all, she decided to run a half marathon to deal with the grief from a bad break up. Shortly after that, she was diagnosed with bipolar. In 2013, she took the plunge and entered the Big Red Run, a 250km multistage race across the Simpson Desert. From that day forward, she has used ultra running to help manage her depression and has chosen to be defined by possibilities rather than labels or limitations.

She has run over twenty ultramarathons including three 250km multistage events (the Big Red Run, the Atacama Crossing, and the Patagonia roving race). She has also run two 100 milers - the Zion 100 and the Hubert 100.

Natashas journey has not been as easy one but it has been an empowering one. Find out why she thinks multi day stage racing is the ultimate sport not only for the athletic challenge but for how it can change and impact your psyche, your self imposed limitations and your possibilities and why the comradeship found out there on the trails and deserts is so valuable to her

Dr Bill Henry Andrews, Ph.D. is an American molecular biologist and gerontologist whose career has centered on searching for a cure for human aging. Andrews is the founder and president of the biotechnology company Sierra Sciences.

 

Aging is a complex and difficult topic that has been the centre of attention of many scientists for centuries. That's also what Bill Andrews, Ph.D. has made his challenge to solve.

Aging isn't an accident. We age because our telomeres get shorter and our cells age. Every time our cells divide, our telomeres get shorter and our cells age. Aging is also the cause of a lot of diseases. Research suggests that control of the telomere length has the potential to treat many diseases linked to aging.

This is what SIERRA SCIENCES group of scientists led by Dr Andrews has been working on for the last two decades and is close to finding cures that will change the way we live
our life forever.

A number of products using their breakthrough techology are already on the market and more powerful ones are in clinical trials.

In the lab they have already made immortal cells that never age or die at Harvard university has already reversed aging in rats and now the human trials are about to get underway.

Canadian Carl Wright  is a Blogger, Warehouse Worker, Lay Pastor, Family Man and an ultramarathon runner.

He only started running 4 years ago at the age of 56 and now at age 60 he is attempting to do his first 100 miler after already having achieved, the half marathon, marathon, 50km and 80km distances.

He is a student in my "Mindset Academy" and this episode is actually a coaching call I did with Carl.

Dr Susan Oldfield hails originally from England and completed her medical training in the UK at UCL medical school, obtaining MBBS.

After this she went on to complete a Diploma in Family Planning as well as a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, whilst completing her GP training and gaining the qualification MRCGP in the UK.

Her family and her decided to move to NZ in 2004. She then obtained GP qualifications in NZ, FRCGP.

Since then Susan has been working as a GP in a busy urban practice in New Plymouth.

She decided to pursue her interest in Integrative Medicine as she feels that combining a conventional approach with a more holistic approach provides clients with the best of both worlds. Because GP consultations are so time-limited, it is difficult to investigate problems in depth. With more time and an integrative approach, Susan is able to add much more to a consultation.

 

In this interview we discuss why the conventional medicine model wasn't working for her anymore, what an "Integrated Practitioner" means and what she sees coming in the future in the world of medicine, health and wellbeing.

Run Coaches Lisa Tamati and Neil Wagstaff talk about using a checklist to check in with your body everyday and learning to gauge from that your body's preparedness for your training sessions.

Training programmes shouldn't be arbitrary but rather take into account your daly performance ability according to your ratings on different aspects of your life. For example how do you rate your hydration, your sleep quality and time, your stress levels, your nutrition today etc etc 

They teach using the data to assess your ability on a day to day basis.

We don't live in a vacuum and most of us have other stressors that have to be balanced in our lives. Learning to understand our body's signals and rhythms will mean we get better fitness results not to mention more health benefits.
